I've always liked the 27. My first, a 27-2 6", was purchased in '73 and was a fun gun on weekends when I was stationed at FT Bragg. Unfortunately, it was sold to finance other pursuits. I found this one as a replacement awhile back for a great price, but it had an 8 3/8" barrel. I bought a nice 6" barrel at a gunshow and had master gunsmith Jim Hoag of Los Angeles do the barrel swap. Stocks are custom Herretts. While not a bullseye gun, it'll group wadcutters into one ragged hole at 25 yards. 158 gr .357s do well, also. A perfect candidate for the "if I only had one gun" syndrome.

Very nice revolver, a suitable substitute for your first one.

I also have a 27-2 with a 6" barrel. (Mine came with the damn red ramp and I haven't done anything to change it.) As much as I like the 27s I wish they continued that theme into other cartridges. I want a 4" M27 but in 45 ACP. I have often thought about getting a M27 and sending it out but will probably settle for a 4" M25.

As for the one gun thought, I shot a bunch of wadcutters through my 357s and a bigger bunch of 158s. Skeeter Skelton had a load he used with the Thompson bullet (Lyman 358156). I substituted the Lee 158 SWC and found it to be as accurate as wadcutters but harder hitting.

Smith will replace the red ramp front with a post. Your 27 may have a pinned front sight, which makes it easier (and cheaper). I also have no use for the red ramp front/white outline rear, which is why I never bought a 29.

My first and only 27 was a six inch beauty I stupidly let get away from me years ago.

really like this 5" and would like to find one some day, that that did not help. seems like a 5' would be a nice balance, but not been able to hold one.

very nice max, what did you do for a "cobbled together 28"? Got to admit i am leaning toward a blue smith for the next ride.

It started it's life as a six inch range gun. My guess is that it belonged to a police department and was very well worn. It was my first attempt at changing barrels and one of my first trigger jobs adding the target hammer and trigger. I ordered an over size .103 cylinder lock and did all the work myself with the exception of cutting the barrel which I did the measurements and took them to a machine shop I know well. It is one of the most fun guns I have. If you drop it, no problem, if you leave it under the seat of the car, no problem. When you take it to the range it is still butter smooth and very accurate. The grips are a set of worn out grips that I simply sanded down on purpose so I would never confuse it with any of my other 6 28's. :)
