I've been wanting a 1911 for a while now but I don't know what would be a good one, i don't have a lot to spend. What would you guys recomend and what should I expect to pay? I have seen them as low as $350 for a high standard (I think that's what it was) I was told they are junk so I didn't get it, they just go up from there.

What to pay depends largely on what you want to do with the gun. If you want to conceal it there are some very nice ltwt models but they are also more pricey. If you just want to have one to poke holes in paper there are some inexpensive ones out there that work good.

1911's are as much personal preference as anything.

For me, 1911=Colt. I know Kimber makes a great 1911, and they come in tactical colors, etc, but I like to have mine with the dancing horse.

Springfield makes a good 1911 for the price. Smith and Wesson makes a 1911 that is pretty nice too.

If you can only have one, make it a full sized one. It's just so well balanced, both in the hand and to the eye, IMVHO.

I have a Colt Government 1911 that was modified heavily, back in the early 1990's. It's by far my favorite semi auto.

If you don't want to spend a lot to get started a Springfield Armory Milspec is a good place to start. It basically a copy of the original military 1911's. From there you can add anything you want; better sights, better trigger, better safety, match barrel, etc. It may be actually cheaper though to buy one already loaded. Kimber's are good. I like the Dan Wessons. Some people like Paras, but I've heard bad things about their customer service. Colts, of course, if you want the original. It really depends, as Max said, what you want it for and how much you want to spent.

the sti spartan is a great gun and you can find those for around 5-6 hell 2 weeks ago i would have had a deal for you but its been sold oh well. its the most accurate .45 i had ever shot.

if your looking for a concealment handgun id go in the direction of glock taurus or walther just due to the size of the gun

The SA Milspec is a nice pistol for the money. I've seen them in gunshops in Texas for under $400.00

That's the model I set out to buy, but found a used Springfield high standard in stainless/black for the same price. I've been very happy with it.

Can't help you much. The ONLY 1911 pattern guns I own are Colts.
