View Full Version : Businesses banning CCW

When concealed carry legislation was passed in Ohio our company debated whether to put up the signs barring CCW from the premises. I argued the matter on the basis of upsetting our customers, some of whom I am sure would be obtaining licenses...this is a pretty pro-gun, rural area.
A few days ago I notice a couple of our branch offices had posted the no guns signs; their managers having decided on their own to do so. One of the offices has been robbed twice so they are understandably nervous. However, it occurred to me that by doing this they are inviting criminals to come into the premises without fear of law abiding citizens being armed. So tomorrow the signs are coming down. To block any backlash from the managers to my boss I sent him a link to an Ohio site which posts lists of unfriendly businesses and asks for CCW supporters to boycott them. Some of our competitors are on that list, though only 1% of Ohio businesses bar guns.

Remember the mall shooting in Omaha? That mall was a no gun zone. Trouble with businesses that do that is that criminals and crazies bent on destruction don't care about the laws and rules the rest of us abide by. BTW, I read that after that shooting, they took the signs down.

FWIW... I don't give a shit about a sign. Unless there is a metal detector at the door, I'll take in my weapon thankyouverymuch! How they gonna know?
In Texas the big things is signs that are not legally posted. They have to be 30.06 compliant, which means size, location and wording must be exact and very few of the signs I have seen are even legal.

Yep, I'm with you on this one. The real joke is the law they tried to pass here to allow businesses the right to tell me I cannot have a gun in my locked car when it's on their premises. Again, how are they going to ever know because the only time they would ever find out would be when I went into my car to help save their tree huggin' ass.......

same here in Tennessee, they have a code to follow and many dont follow it so it dont bother me to go in carrying anyway
Unless the place falls into one of these categories they can take their "No Guns" signs and shove them up their ass.
The following is a list of places where you are restricted from carrying a weapon or firearm even if you have a license. Please note that this is a simplified list. The places marked by an asterisk (*) may have exceptions or additional restrictions. See Section 790.06 (12), Florida Statutes for a complete listing.
o any place of nuisance as defined in s. 823.05
o any police, sheriff, or highway patrol station
o any detention facility, prison, or jail; any courthouse
o any courtroom*
o any polling place
o any meeting of the governing body of a county, public school district, municipality, or special district
o any meeting of the Legislature or a committee thereof
o any school, college, or professional athletic event not related to firearms
o any school administration building
o any portion of an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages for consumption*
o any elementary or secondary school facility
o any area technical center
o any college or university facility*
o inside the passenger terminal and sterile area of any airport*
o any place where the carrying of firearms is prohibited by federal law
On that same point, I've always had a problem with the signs on the doors of most gun dealers that say "No Loaded Weapons". Of course every one of the people inside the shop are wearing holstered, loaded guns open carry.
Think about it, the only people legally allowed to carry a loaded weapon into these establishments are people who have passed both federal and state background checks, have never committed a crime, much less a violent crime and are supposedly trained on safe gun handling. What do they think, that I'm suddenly going to lose my mind and try to hold up a gun shop where 3 guys are packing open carry.........

Actually... I don't care if I violate 790.... To quote an old wise man: "I'd rather be caught with it than without!"
The penalty is a 2nd degree misdemeanor.. NBD when it is vs. my life!

My work has a signs posted as well. But that doesn't stop anyone from carrying their weapon in here.

As a cc permit holder, i don't advertize the fact i'm carrying. I was told by the local police dept. that all they can do is ask you to leave. If you refuse it's simple trespassing. :gun:

The libs in Ohio have been trying to make the authorities publish a list of citizens with CCW. Fortunately they have not yet caved to that invasion of privacy.
As to employees carrying guns, our company does not permit that for liability reasons.

That is pretty much it. For now. Stores cannot write the law. They can have their own rules. Concealed means just that. If I am ever ask to leave, I would do just that. Trespassing is not a simple deal here. You can get get a year in jail. This came about because of poaching years back. The ones for the most part that have the problem are the JW types that want everyone to know they carry-- Idiots. :gun: :paper -- What better place to go off than somewhere they KNOW there are no guns allowed. Yet, some never learn. They sure didn't learn anything from the shooting at VA TECH.. a couple years ago. Just the other day someone reported shots heard-- their so called early warning system fell on its ass. Not to mention they are out in the country so to speak, and guess what? It's hunting season. I have no sympathy for those unwilling to defend themselves. It just goes on and on. :banghead

My company dose'nt allow carry either. but i live by the old adage, i'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6...so if it ever were to happen i might be out of a job but alive to tell about it. Personal choice

It is called Concealed Carry for a reason.
If you can't see it, you don't know I have it.

If a store posts a no ccw sign I usually won't enter the premises. I will send them a note saying I (and my family) will never shop there again. I try to take the time to ensure that my pistol is really concealled, not just covered. So far I've never had a problem

I wanted to get a CPL so I could carry at work when I run my route but losing my job is something I could no longer recover readily from. If I have to collect cash then I may consider carrying but even then I typically don't.

I carry and as budroe said, I take great efforts to insure it cannot be seen.

To update you on the original thread story... I did an investigation about how the no-gun signs mysteriously appeared at two of our stores. No one seems to know (or at least won't admit it). I suspect the local PD might have supplied them as some departments are opposed to concealed carry. In fact, a local deputy once had the audacity to comment that we had no sign posted after one of our locations was robbed. I just laughed at him.
Suffice it to say the signs are no longer posted.

And to think he is "protecting and serving" us... However, the Sheriff is a good guy and really supportive of CCW. When I went to get mine, he walked me through the approval immediately (they can take up to a couple weeks if they want to).

Well.. yeah! I mean the sign said "No guns allowed" It didn't say "guns are only allowed in if you are going to rob the place"
remphoto, was the deputy old enough to shave? Or just stupid?

Hello
Here is my take on it. The second amendment gives me the Option as a Law abiding Tax Payer to carry freely where and when I want. I have carried since 911 no matter what any sign's say. I simply do not care and trust my Judgement far more than depending on a Police agency that most of it's Men in Blue can not hit a bull in the ass if locked in the barn with it. I do part time work at our Local range as an N.R.A. range safety officer and see many cop's come and shoot and believe me if you were there to witness just how bad they actually shot, You too would carry 7-24. We also have a range that the Federal agents shoot often. They too are way under practiced which again, makes my decision to carry that much more of a need than a safe Practice. I say don't bother with 911 I can take care of issues myself, and will if I have to. Just three months ago, some nut Job went into a Local Church and shot and killed Three People with a 12 Gauge shotgun. Good thing he did not pick my church or he would not have gotten one shot off. :bat: I trained my pastor and begged him to place his Kimber in the vestibule about Two years ago. He did so and was Glad he chose to do this when that random Church slaughter took place her in Knoxville. There is more and more random act's of violence being done these days with the way economic times have changed, and Little repercussions as a result of this for the Offenders carrying a weapon is not a choice in my book any more it is a requirement if you choose to live in a Lawless society that can do nothing to protect it's Innocent people other than send a cop to the scene 20 Minutes too late... Hamerdown
