Be unprepared.

So I'm getting ready for my 3 gun match. I load up my rifle, a bunch of magazines, and my belt. (I even grab my AR Pistol. I want to use it as much as possible in today's match. They're just fun to shoot.) Grab the shot gun, a bunch of shells, and my spare ammo holders. Grab my Brand new in the box glock 35. I should have shot it to ensure reliability. Instead you spent your "spare" time stippling the grip. Who cares, it's a glock. It'll run, Right? Maybe. If you had any .40 cal ammo. You dufus. You have a ton of 9mm but not a single box of .40 cal. (Face palm here.)

No problem. Slap in that Lone wolf 40 to 9 conversion barrel you ordered. (I am planning on building a 9mm carbine to shoot Pistol caliber Carbine class, so I picked up a 9mm barrel, ejector, and extractor for this pistol) So, I have one on hand. I have a bunch of 9mm magazines. I should be fine.....right?

Well, I get the barrel tossed in, I change the extractor, and the ejector. (Many say it's not necessary, but it's a nice "peace of mind" kind of move. Should be good to go.

Well, I get to the match, get signed in. Get the morning safety brief and get ready to shoot.

The first stage is a rifle/pistol stage. I decide to run the entire thing with my AR Pistol. One mag change and just keep the fire coming out of the barrel. That thing BARKS like mad. The flame coming out of the end was impressive. I didn't post the fastest score of the day, but I did post the fastest score of my group. ;) Perfect start.

The next stage is a pistol/shotgun stage. 3 Paper targets, the rest steel. The first three paper targets need to be neutralized via pistol fire. Triple tap for insurance. The buzzer goes off, and I'm off. Draw the pistol, line up the sights and squeeze one off. The gun short strokes. I tap-rack-bang, and the next round is a stove pipe. I end up single shooting my way through this stage. Dismal. A single shot glock isn't much of an advantage. Not to mention shooting with your brother and a bunch of friends who take this opportunity to rub it in your face that you went from 1st to worst with your single shot glock.

Frustrated, I went ahead to the safe area and stripped down my glock. I used my pocket knife to free the spring from the captured guide rod, and whipped out the leather man to snip a few coils off the spring......

Well, once you get the spring off the rod, you'll not be able to capture the spring again on that rod. You need to compress the spring manually and push the rod into place. The problem is that I couldn't hold the spring down on the rod and put it back into place. There was too much pressure on from the spring to get this done. There was no way to grip the spring as you put it back into the gun. I ended up clipping off a total of 1/2" off the spring until I had enough strength to hold the spring compressed and seat the guide rod back in place.

Wouldn't you know it, one of the guys in our group is a Cop who has gone through the Glock Armorer's Course. He's standing there, mouth open, asking what the hell I thought I was doing. I looked at him, and just smiled.

We finished that stage quickly, and the group in front of us still had 3 shooters left, so our Range Officer let us clear the range, and test out this pistol with it "modifications." Sure enough the pistol ran like a raped ape. Dumped 3 magazines into the berm with no malfunctions. The glock ran perfectly for the rest of the day.

Our glock armorer just shook his head and smiled.

I swear he was going to puke when he saw me ripping apart my "brand new" glock and hacking at it wit a leatherman. It was priceless.

I could picture you with that grin you always wear looking back at the armorer. :)

Ah yes, going to the match with untested shite.... we've all done it at least once.... I've done it in every discipline I've ever shot!!!

So I understand you are in the market for a new guide rod and spring for the G35?

I use a Tungsten (http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=1122&CAT=83) one from Lone Wolf. Nice and heavy to tame the .40's muzzle flip a bit.

The good news is that they work very well.
The bad news is that they are backordered and run about $45.

It requires a spring of course and assembling it is a 2 person job. There's a stock strength (http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=786&CAT=265) 17 pound in mine. Another $9 and then throw in shipping.

I went with nickel plated brass. The tungsten ones I have seen first hand are all galled after the first couple hundred rounds. I am told the nickel plated brass rod is harder and just a tad lighter than tungsten. I am running an uncaptured rod and spring for ease of use.
