I really like this gun, just wish it didn't have the damn lock and MIM parts. Shoots good and is really smooth though.

I really like that pistol. I wonder if I could refit one of those barrels to a prelock 686. Blasphemy, I know, but that barrel is COOL looking.

I'm sure if you could find a barrel it could be fitted. The 686 series has had no changes in the frame dimensions.

Is that the new one they just came out with recently for competetion?

I don't like the lock or MIM parts either, but times change. Guess if I want a new S&W I'm going to have to get used to the idea. Locs are easy to remove. The two-piece barrel bothers me more than the lock or MIM parts. For us dinosaurs there's still a load of great used revolvers on the market.

Yes it is, like I say it is a very nice shooting gun and well balanced. It actually could use a little more barrel weight for 357 shooting but is great with 38's. They made a 38 model but they are very difficult to find and about twice the price.

I tend to ignore much of what comes from S&W these days.

But if I read this correrctly, they have tried to "improve" the 686 by making it lighter? They should have left it alone. It is hard to improve what is perfect.

When I want a lighter 357, I will get a M19.

This model was lightened up too make it under the weight limit for IDPA. The MIM parts can be swaped out with forged parts(PC action jobs are done this way)and the barrel is one piece, the crown the factory puts on it makes it look two piece. S&W made a 646 40S&W and a 686 38Super in this same configuration. The 646 was later made in a standard barrel model without the lock, the 646 had a tittanium cylinder for strength.
