The following Models are Listed in their serial range below. We Must remember that anything made before 1957 is a Pre-Model stamped revolver, so it will Not have the Model number stamped in the crane area. The butt of the grip frame is the best location of a revolver serial number as it is large and easy to read. This serial sequence covers the following Models 20,21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,57,58

In 1969 S&W decided to change the serial [prefix] to-N- Below is the seerail numbers for Guns starting with the-N-Prefix.

1980-1983--N80000

1982-1986--N900000


After 1986 S&W Changed the serial numbers to Multi Letter Prefix before the actual serial numbers. It is Very Complex and at Best confusing. I do have this materail on hand if anyone needs to get an approximate Birth date for their revolver contact me. Remember these serial numbers are how the revolvers were stamped and are only a general reference as many guns may not have shipped until a later date and the Only sure way to know when your gun shipped is to apply to a Factory History Letter..
