Anyone else, besides Hammerdown, interested in this round?
I want an SP101 in this caliber really bad. Been waiting over a year for the dang thing to be approved for Kalifornia. I even wrote to Ruger about it last week and they told me it's been through the independant lab tests and just waiting to the DOJ listing. The one local gun shop I frequent says they've gotten all kinds of inquiries about it and three of the guys that work there say that they're grabbing the first ones they get.
It seems like such a great round for a carry gun. Six shots instead of the five you normally get in the SP and more powerful than the .38+P by a fair margin. And put it in a SA with a longer barrel and you've got a damn fine small game round. Freedom Arms offers it in the Model 97. How about a 120 grn bullet at just over 1600 fps? Or the Speer Gold Dot 115 grn. at 1300 fps from the SP101 ain't too bad, either.
If you haven't heard much about this round check out the article on Gunblast and the side of ham he used in a penetration test.

I'd love to have one, but I haven't seen any locally and have intentionally not ask my favorite shop to order one (being as it's this close to Christmas, I have other bills, etc.), but I would weaken and do an impluse buy.

I think the SP101 would be fine, but I'd really prefer S&W to bring out their little Model 60 j-frame with the 5 inch barrel in .327 Mag. A Ruger Single Six with the 5.5 inch barrel would also tug at the strings of my pocketbook.

While I suspect it'd do nicely as a defensive/carry caliber - I have beaucoup small guns that can produce lots of roar and would look at the SP101 or the Charter Arms snubbie as just one more in the drawer. But as a hunting round? I think it'd be great for small to medium game and stands to be quite accurate if it lives up to the family history. I think the Freedom Arms SA version would be wonderful, but I suspect it's price is a bit higher than I'd want to fork over.

I would love to have one but I need to know what ammo costs locally before I even consider it. My SP101 in .32 H&R magnum was a sweet shooting gun but I couldn't afford the ammo often enough to keep it. Another issue is that I already have a SP101 in 9mm and .357 mag so I don't really need another.

"Need"? What's this "need" business?

As an unrepentent reloading affictionado I've been dying to try this one out.
Now if only there was a detective special in the calibre I'd be in hog heaven.

The latest issue of Shooting Times has an article on reloading for this round. The author mentions that the nominal pressure max for this round is 45,000 psi. Considerably higher than the nominal 35,000 or so for the .357.

I saw that. Very interesting. I would think it shouldn't be a problem for manufacturers using a 38 platform for their guns. With the proper alloys and heat treatment and the significantly thicker cylinder walls this one could be a real fireball for a small frame gun.

As I've said, I'd love to see the little j-frame Model 60 with the five inch barrel chambered in .327 Mag. Heck, I'd love to see the 3 inch Model 60 chambered in the .327.:D:thumb:

My real joy though would be to have Colt bring back their Diamondback in that chambering. :p

My dream would be a detective in the calibre with a 3 inch barrel.
I'd certainly like a diamondback as well.

I didn't buy the sp101 i bought the taurus 327 and it's a nice little gun..... But i wont shoot it much it's angel's gun and everytime i shoot it i feel like i got punched in the nose. I bet this would be a really goos hunting round out of a long barrel revolver

I thought from the git-go that the 327 might make a great hunting round for small game. Imagine a K frame smith with about a 6 inch barrel and you'd have a great hunting gun.

I'd rather imagine a little Marlin 1894. :) Maybe paired with a Ruger Single Six with the 5.5 inch barrel. :D

That would make a DANDY combination, especially in the small framed single six.
Too many people in their quest for power are willing to sacrifice weight handiness and portability. I'm a big believer in guns being no larger than needed to do the job. This is especially true of guns you're going to carry.

Which is why I have gotten rid of all my Rugers. Did it years ago when I realized that along with what you said, I discovered that for me, the original ballistics are superb. Why carry a heavy piece of iron if you are lauching a 255 grain bullet at about 1000 fps. Or a 240 at about 1200 fps. Lots of well mad elighter revolvers out htere to handle the job.

Rugers are (were) well made but tend to be overbuilt for the job.

so would you consider a magnum reasearch 45-70 revolver to big or just right?

You need to get Angel to set her priorities right! Guns are more important than weddings, IMHO.:D
