Thought some post war K 22's might be a nice thread. I have thinned out a few of late, but still have a couple or so. I am sure there are plenty around here. :)
Bad photo, and no letter, but here is # 190-- I think late 1946. I found the Ivory last winter so her original grips stay in the box. :)

Hello Tusker
Nice early Post-War Masterpiece. Here is one I came upon that shipped in November of 1947 and is K-376X. The Odd Part of this revolver is that it still has the Pre-War Mushroom extractor knob which should have been Long gone by this time. Never say Never with S&W as they Waste not, Want Not..I Gave $500.00 for this and later learned the Magna grip's are Numbered to it..:D

This is the First Model that S&W offered during the Civil War. A 7 shot 22 rimfire. S&W had 7 shooters since the beginning!

Very nice, gents!
Here's the earliest one I have... post war, probably late 40's. Never bothered to check the serial number. I just like to shoot 'em.

Here it is with another K22, a 17-3 from the early 70's. Both get shot regularly.

Bob when I ride down to the hill country next spring I'll have to bring a couple of guns and we can do a range trip. I have to shoot some of these. :)
I'll be waiting, Max! We'll take a tour of Hill Country Rifles, eat BBQ and go blasting. Total male-bonding.

Nah...My guess is that appropriately checked firearms will be fine. The long delays will involve everyone getting testicular or ovarian cancer from all the crotch X-rays.

My brother followed all the procedures at the airport to check his guns... the lady at the ticket counter/baggage was new and went into panic at the mention of "guns". It was all sorted out, but they missed their flight. He said it was a royal pain.

Kinda depends. I've had bad luck, but on the whole I've had more good luck than bad.

Hello Jim
"Now, That's Funny, I don't Care who ya are" I don't fly often but when I do it is a Royal Pain in The Azz for me. I have an artificial Right hip, 4 rods in my spine and about Ten screws holding all the work together in my back. The gate cheaker Freaks Out when I step up there and they Just about strip search me every time. I had my Right Hip recently replaced this summer after the first one wore out after 23 Years of hard use, and my Doctor gave me a Neat card for my wallet that shows the appliance, who made it and all my personal information on it. I have not flown since I got the replacement to try it out, but I suspect it will still be a Freak show for me when I do...:banghead Hammerdown

Hello
After Much searching, I was able to Complete my Pre-War & Early Post-War K-22's. Neither came with their Box's or tools so it took me awhile to Locate them. It is not easy finding a decent box for a 74 or 63 Year old gun. I still lack the Tiny Nickel Handle sight adjuster AKA screw driver for my Pre-War K-22. They seem to be out of sight no Pun Intended on price, but I hope someday to land one to complete the package...Hammerdown

Bob,
Is the 17-8 the revolver with the round butt? Also known as the Classic Model or something?
I have a 17-4 and enjoy it but need to polish the chambers. Some brands of ammo stick. I also need to fit a pair of American ivory (stag) to it.

Hello Kevin
The model 17-8's were the start of the Ten shot cylinders Full Lug Barrels for the K-22. With The additional weight S&W Used an aluminum cylinder rather than the classic Carbon steel style. Be Very Careful Polishing one of these alloy cylinders as it would not take much over Polishing to make one worthless. They did make a few with the steel cylinders early on in this model but they rarely show up, and the Carbon steel frame K-22's were ceased after this model in Favor of the new generation model 617's that are of stainless steel material... That 17-8 is a Heritage series, which were made in the performance center. VERY nice revolvers, but not popular, for some reason. I'm still agonizing over whether to shoot it or not. I have plenty of K22s to shoot, but this was a somewhat rare revolver that the Performance Center built. I might keep it unfired.

I wouldn't want to be crass here, but until you shoot it you only know that it was/is a VERY nice LOOKING revolver.
I'm quite fond of some Colts, but I have to say, my experience with their "Commerative" firearms is that they use that chance to shove some of their QC rejects out the door with a high dollar tag, thinking that no one will actually shoot them.
I'd like to think that the S&W Performance Center feels that a gun should shoot as well as it looks. But the only way to test that is to drop the hammer on a few rounds. :)

Hello Bob
Perhaps they used the same Dash series for the Heritage revolvers as they used for the Introduction of the new 10 shot alloy cylinder full Lug Barrel standard Production model K-22's that were stamped 17-8 in 1996. I stand to be corrected on the use of Full Lug barrels on the K-22's Though... as they came out in The 17-6 series in 1990. This information came from The Standard Book of Smith & Wesson's by Supica and Nahas as they are not my area of collecting and the only Full Lug Barrel S&W revolver that I own is my Model 16-4 which is now converted from .32 H&R Magnum to the Federal .327 Magnum caliber... Hello Max
I have a No Dash Model 48 with a 4" Tube that is a 4 screw model that shipped in 1961 and recently added one a Little older one being a First Year Model 48 that shipped in December 1959. The 6" Model came with it's optional .22 L R Cylinder shown with it, and it will fit right into my 4" Barrel model from 1961 which allows that gun to safely fire .22 L.R. rounds as well. The Purchase if it was Like adding Two More K-22's to my collection...:) Hammerdown

Hello Bob & Others
Thank's I appreciate your Kind words. I feel someday these model 48's will come into their Own and prices will be much higher than any standard K-22's due to their Lower production figures. I enjoy shooting the .22 Magnum round. It has a neat bark and recoil not felt with standard 22's. The Cool Part is when you change from .22 Magnum caliber over to .22 Long Rifle by swapping the cylinder, No sight adjustment is needed as it shoots the exact same point of aim. Below is a Pair of Recent Targst I shot with Both cylinders in the same revolver, as shown it can shoot much better than I am able to hold like most K-22's...:) Hammerdown

Hey Max
Nope... I gave up and dumped it for $600.00 and went back to the Older classic K-22's instead...I have been spoiled, they really shoot tight...:)Hammerdown
Kurt have you heard anything about the accuracy tuning that some do? Here is the link to one place that advertises it for the 617.

Hello Max
I checked out the Link you provided and it appears they Know their stuff. Have you had any done by them ? If so was there a great Improvement ? I have been very, Very spoiled by super early K-22's one being my Outdoorsman Made in 1936. That Gun has no equeal in fit or finish and shoots super tight. My Early Post War Model K-22 from 1947 is just as scary accurate. When I first got the Model 617-6 revolver the very first thing I noticed was that it did not group as tight as my classics. The use of JB Bore paste Improved it much, But it still would not hone down to a One Ragged hole Group result like my other Classic K-22 revolvers can produce.
I tried about every brand of ammo you can think of in it, and all fell short on results when compared to my Classic K-22's. I was hoping for the best but it did not seem to come around as some will with more shooting of them in Time some Bores seem to season and the groups get tighter. That wasn't the case with this Model 617 as it did not sen to change even after 1500-2000 rounds down the barrel, so I sold it off and returned to the classics. The newest K-22 I have now is my Model 48's being from 1959-1961 period and Both are four screw revolvers. They both show tight groups and perform flawlessly.
I Guess I am one of those Hard head's not willing to be Patient or try something new...Hammerdown
Kurt I have not tried them but have considered sending one of my 617's just to see what they could do.
Out of all your testing have you found any brand of 22 ammunition to be superior to the others?
Hi Max
I've found that my K22s like Eley 10X .22 match... expensive, but one-hole groups are the norm at 25 yards. My 17-3 will shoot well within the X-ring (1.5") at 50 yards from a Ransom Rest with Eley. Also, I'm going to post a photo of my nice 5-screw K22 ASAP here... early 50's, I believe, narrow rib, etc. Taking the photo now.

Here's my cherry 5-screw K22 (1953). A pleasure to shoot.
