Hello
One day while at a Local Gun show, I saw a guy walking around with a closed Lier-Sigler S&W revolver box. I asked what he had to sell, and he replied this Old Nickel S&W revolver as he handed it to me. I swapped box's with him as I had Brought a New In Box Hong Kong Police model 10 to swap with. I Opened the box and saw what I thought to be a model 15 Combat Masterpiece, but the barrel was of the Heavy Kind and that threw me off. I Opened the cylinder and this revolver was marked 14-2. Now I knew the model 14 was the K-38 Target Masterpiece, but they had a 6" Barrel which also had a Patridge front sight and this one had a Baughman quick draw just like the model 15 Had. I asked what he could tell me about it ? He said his father had Ordered it Brand new back in the mid 1960's and he had to wait a long time for it, and that it was a real tack driver. It then hit me that this gun may be one of the Dayton Outdoor Sport's revolvers made back then in low production. I asked what he was looking to swap for ? He said he wanted a blued .38 Special with a 4" barrel not heavy like the one he had. I motioned for him to open up the box he was holding and he just loved the model 10 so I asked how he would trade ? he wanted $60.00 and my Gun. Done I said, as I reached for my wallet. He told me he had the original box for this revolver at home and would get it to me. I was just tickled to get this revolver, and if it was what I thought it to be, I had a real rare Gem. I flew home and grabbed my reference book. The serial number sequence sure fell at the time frame, but I still was not sure. I E-mailed Roy Jinks and asked him what I had, and his reply was that the gun fell in at the serial number sequence of The Famous Dayton Outdoor Sports revolver time frame. Apparently back in 1966 Dayton Out Door Sports who is a large Police supply company out of Dayton, Ohio contacted S&W and asked them to make a custom model 14 revolver with a 4" Heavy barrel and Baughman quick draw sights. S&W set aside a special 4 Block serial number sequence for these revolvers and started building the Dayton revolvers. They were shipped in lot shipments as this was way before S&W had their custom shop, so these were built on the assembly line when other orders slowed up. When a batch were finished they would ship them to Dayton and others waiting to be completed were placed in the S&W Vault for a later finish date. This took place from 1966-1968 and mine was part of the Third shipment falling into 1967 time frame. This is the Only known revolver that S&W Built on their assembly line with a reserved Four Block serial number range. There was a grand total of 2038 of them built between 1966-1968 completion date. Here is the Dayton Outdoor Sports revolver. I traded this revolver off, early in January for one I wanted a lot more, a Pre-16 K-32 masterpiece... Can't keep em all ya know..Hammerdown
