Hey Paul
I had one and did not like it. It was not accurate to me and I could not figure out why. I tried all facets of hand Loads through it, but could not get it to shoot well. It was one of the Brazilian contract guns that were left over 1917's S&W's shipped in 1937. Perhap's mine was a reject who Know's since it was not accurate it is taking room up in someone elses safe now..They don't shoot good they dont stay long with me... H.D.

Hi
The Problem I see with most of these 1917's is they have been rode Hard and put away hot. Many I have checked out have miss-Matched cylinders, Loose lock up and their accuracy is Marginal due to Building them at an alarming rate back in 1917 when guns were needed quickly they are Very Crude at best. If It were me, and I had a Chub for this model revolver, I would Purchase the new edition classic they now have out in Blued or Nickel finish's. I can Guarantee they will be a lot more accurate and they will not look like a used Plow share, and all will come with a full factory warranty which is Life time..Most Originals I have seen are better than $600.00 in Sad shape, so add a couple of hundred dollars more, and it will Put you into a Brand new one...:) Hammerdown

I'm not sure about the S&W 1917 but the some of the Colts had a 45Colt barrel blank installed and marked 45acp. the older 45Colt caliber barrells were.454 diameter amd the 45acp is .452, this would account for some of the accuracy problems if S&W did the same thing.

Hello
I have Three .45 Cal. S&W Revolvers and have not had an accuracy issue with any of them. I have heard the .45 ACP revolvers have large cylinder throats but my 25-2 seems to be fine. I feel the larger throats may have been to cover S&W's Corperate Ass from hand loaders trying to magnumize the caliber...Hammerdown

Not to mention they come in CASE HARDENED finish on the frames. That really gets me for some reason.

Hello
I guess I should have been more precise in my response. They make an all Blued Model along with an All Nickel model which I have seen,Then they make the case Hardened & Blued model as well... Hammerdown

I belive I was the one who was unclear. I meant to say in addtion to the blued and nickel versions, it also comes in a version with a case hardened frame.
Sorry for the confusion and thanks for clearing it up for everyone trying to read this thread.
To bring you back to the 25-2 and the cylinder throat issue.....I have heard that the 25-2 had a running change in the cylinder. Some of the early ones had a throat bored to the .45 long colt spec, which I belive was 2 thousandths larger than the .45 ACP. Is this true?
I haven't really concerned myself about it, but I'm really thinking I would like to pick one up if I ever found one, and I would like to know how I would check for this quickly and easily. If I ever come across a 25-2.

Hello
Mine was made in 1977 so it is a Late 25-2. I have had no accuracy Issues using slugs of .452." I would say if any .45 ACP ammo is at hand try placing the bullet of said ammo into the business end of the cylinder. If it slides right in, The throats are large. If it is met with resistence it should be a fine shooter... Hammerdown
