Colt US Model 1917, chambered in .45 ACP. A modification of the Colt New Service revolver, manufactured for the US military during WWI.

After taking a second look at the grips and the barrel, it may be a Colt New Service RCMP model, chambered in .455 Eley. Manufactured in 1909.

Popeye, you are correct. The gun is marked RCNWMP down the grip back strap and has been rechambered for .45Colt.

The New Service was the only revovler I recall Elmer Keith descibing as too big!

I really like those old Colts, I have two of them, both modified one for PPC the other for IDPA which makes it a good street gun.

I can't tell for sure but it appears to have been refinished. It has also been converted to 45 acp from it's original chambering. As such it's probably a very nice shooter but it's "collector value" has been compromised.
Not trying to throw cold water on you paul. Just providing some information.
FAR be it from me to try and talk ANYONE out of buying a Colt!
