Remphoto, (or anyone)
In another thread, about internal locks, you wrote;
...I have one on the back strap of my 1911 Springer 1911...
Remember, I am not an afficianado of self loaders, are you talking about the grip safety? Or do 1911s now have an additional lock?
Thanks.

I think he's referring to an internal lock in the mainspring housing of some 1911s.

That is correct. I believe that the newer Springfields like mine have a lock which uses a flat key at the back of the gun below the grip safety.

What happens if you switch out the mainspring housing, with say, an S&A widemouth speed load style? Will the gun still operate as normal? This picture is of the Smith & Alexander Mag well, which is integrated into the mainspring housing.

All that happens is that you no longer have an integral lock on your Springfield 1911A1.

No loss there!

Except to satisfy a government request, does this improve the 1911? I don't see it that way.
Okay, correct me if I am wrong.
The 1911 was designed for the cavalry and originally with just the thum safety. At the request of the firearms board, the grip safety was added. This made two safeties, independant and functional with one hand. (There may have also been a firing pin safety but I am not sure) Anyway, this new thing sounds like a sfaety that would only be used by someone not familar with firearms in general and the 1911 in particular. Just the kind of person who should NOT have a 1911.
I wonder how many of the retrofit kits they have sold in the last 8 years?
