Well my uncle brought up a good point to me the other day. he asked me what i wanted in a shtf gun, well i said reliability accuracy easy to find ammo and easy to find parts. well he asked me how many people i know with glock .40's well most every family i know has a glock but most are 9's. well then he asked me what do the police carry.... good point huh if it ever comes down to it during the soviet invasion (lol) that will probally be the most used handgun

I would think 9mm would be available as it is a nato round.

9mm or .45ACP for the availability of ammo. Parts aren't an issue because if shtf you can just take the sidearm from one of the abundant corpses in your area. IF s really hit the fan... bow and arrow.

I'm surprised the glock zealots haven't weighed in here yet. They tend to be pretty rabid about them.
My personal first choice would probably be a colt 1911 pattern in 45 acp.

There will be no Armed Invasion of the United States. It will be economic. It's already begun.

Spot on RJ! The reason given by a Japanese General for not invading the mainland US was "Are you kidding?? They ALL have guns!"
I think the invasion we need to worry about here is from within when the ne'er do wells start hunting the wealthy(er) people.
But top be back on topic, I am on the 9mm bandwagon. It is cheap and plentiful, and if you can shoot straight, it has plenty of stopping power. (I once capped a 200 pound hog with a .22mag and dropped him in his tracks)

The glock 23 (.40s&w) is usually my go to weapon. Its fairly easy to conceal, hits hard, holds enough ammo to get out of most problems and is as reliable as any pistol on the market. My other ccw is a Colt CC in .45acp. I have several cases of ammo for each, not really worried about trying to get ammo from the military or anyone else. Thankfully I was able to buy a large stock of ammo before prices skyrocketed - I still try to buy several hundred rounds a month.
