What would be the best home defence ammo? Ive been carrying fmj but decided that fmj gives to much overpentration, so what should i use? Im wanting something that isn't to highly priced but i kinda want it to look mean(just for me).

I like Gold Dot from Speer. It's not cheap, but it does a fine job. You need to make sure it functions in your chosen weapon.
I still have a ton of military ammo in 45acp, while it may be a little old it is some of the best quality ammo I have seen. I think you could submerge this stuff and it would still go bang after a month or two.

That sealer is sweet stuff.

I use Federal Hydra Shok (sp?) in .45 ACP and Win. Silvertips in .38 Super. Mostly because I had acquired a goodly quantity - way back when - and had enough to qualify as satisfactory in my carry guns. I'm happy with the way they work when I tested them in mud and wet paper. The Hydra Shok tends to plug with dirt/etc. and doesn't always mushroom - but a nice flat point cuts a good wound channel anyway. But the hogs upon which I verified that were just as dead as if the slug had done a beautiful mushroom.
My guess is that the new kick a$$ solid copper-alloy hollow point rounds will give you the best terminal performance in a defensive shoot. I don't know that I'll ever want to afford them, so I spend a bit of time every week trying to keep my bullet placement ability a notch or two over rock bottem.

I'm using Hornady 185 XTP's right now, cause they shot the best. I've heard that the Hornady TAP ammo is really good. It's a +P load, too. I'll probably try that when I can find some.

i don't remeber the gun you use but if your using a 2.5 inch barrel like me they say the +p is pretty much a waste of time due to not giving the powder and gases enough time.

Sig 220. Didn't realize you were using a short barreled gun. Not sure what works best with that. Some company makes ammo for short barreled revolvers but not sure about autos. Think it's Corbon. Edit:couldn't find it on Corbon website.

The best .45 ACP I ever used was of my own concoction, the 185 gr. Sierra JHC bullet ahead of Winchester Action Pistol powder. WAP is now discontinued, but I've found Hodgdon's HS-6 a good substitute.
For factory ammo, I found the Winchester Silvertip to be very explosive on crows out to about seventy five yards or so. I'd go with these for social work.

I've loaded .45 ACP more than any other round. I've used RED DOT, GREEN DOT, Winchester 231, WAP, and a number of others. I'm going to try the Hodgdon powders, as I hear they are cleaner than the rest. I used the Alliant DOT powders a lot since I could load shotgun shells, as well as .45 and .9mm out of the same powder. It was accurate, but highly dirty.

I was using, originally, Winchester 540 when I went to WAP. Now use HS-6 for many cartridges as middle-of-the-road type loadings. I build +P .38 Specials, .357 Mag. with cast bullets, .44 Special and .44 Magnum with 240gr. JHP, and .45 Colt with JHPs. Danged versatile powder.

I am once again with Jim on this one. FHS were really the first production stuff out, used to come in little plastic wallets, I still have some somewhere. Others have come along, maybe just as good, but I still reach for the federals when buying. :):thumb:

Thanks Bob. I'll give some of it a try, when I am out of powder. Does it burn cleaner than Winchester 231? I like the accuracy I got out of Win 231, but it was danged dirty!
