Report from the weekend 3-Gun competition:
I need to learn for personal experience.... RJ was nice enough to invite me to his gun club on Saturday to test out the Saiga before the match on Sunday. Remember, this is a gas-operated shotgun based on the Kalashnikov AK-47 action. It had some problems running the Federal shells when the gas control system was set on "2". Failure to eject was the primary PITA. It ran fine on setting "3". Get home, clean the gun and reassemble. Get to the match on Sunday and forget to check the gas control setting. On the first stage, had multiple failure to eject again... doh!! Forgot to check if the gas setting was correct.... it was on "2". Changed the setting to "3" and it ran fine. Chalk it up to CRS.... Can't Remember Shite... One highlight of the day was a 20 target, 40 round rifle stage where you had to move between four different shooting positions to engage all the targets. Distances varied from end of the muzzle (literally) out to about 50 yards. For scoring, you have to get two rifle rounds or three pistol rounds in the A/B area (center of mass) on each target or you get a 10 second "failure to neutralize" penalty. Got all my hits, including one "double" where there was only one hole but it was a bit larger than .223 caliber. Not too shabby for firing from a standing position.... The other highlight was RJ dropping 8" plates at 100 yards with his 9mm pistol caliber carbine.... sweet.... HH

Saiga Saga finally at an end?
Well, the three gun match that HoldHard is talking about was great, except for the fact my shotgun took a shit. It wouldn't cycle ANYTHING and just caused me a big ole headache. So, I went back to the drawing board. Took off the gas block and opened up the port that was partially covering the gas vent in the barrel. I tested it, and it still didn't cycle properly with a full 12 round magazine. So I called Carolina Shooters Supply and discussed my issue with Greg (the owner.) He sent me 2 reduced recoil springs and said before you do anything, try them. For ANY 2 1/2 inch shell, these are the ones to use. He cautioned that the Saiga is a battle shotgun. It's designed to use slugs and buck shot. It has a heavy recoil spring and by using his reduced recoil spring, it would cycle birdshot much better. I got the spring today, put it in and took it to the range. It ate up EVERYTHING I threw at it. I'm now again a HAPPY CAMPER. Bring it on, HoldHard. I'm ready for you at the next match!
